I started my career as a writer and editor for a variety of weekly and daily newspapers in Nebraska andColorado. After 10 years, I decided I wanted to teach and write, and I went back to school. Since 2014 I have taught at the Zoo Academy, a half-day academy program serving high school juniors and seniors at the Henry Doorly Zoo andAquarium. I have developed an Environmental English and Literature and Medicine classes to more closely tie literature to areas of career interest.
Mrs. Leising and I worked together to design a cross-curricular project that brought pyric herbivory into our science and English classes. My focus was on teaching students to design citizen science projects to assist students in gathering data for their year-long research projects. Students were tasked with designing the text, imaging, and instructions necessary to launch a citizen science project to help gather data. I also worked with my conservation service learning students to develop games to help solve conservation problems, including rangeland and prairie issues.
