Bio

Ryan has worked for Nebraska Extension for three years working with producers in Cherry County. He strives to bring scientific information that is locally applicable and relay it to ranchers in a way that is meaningful and helpful to their operations. He also works to address current issues and concerns producers are dealing with and help them find practical solutions. With a background in rangeland management, Ryan focuses much of his time around grazing management and monitoring, prescribed fire, woody encroachment, lease agreements, and other rangeland topics.

Project Description

Producers will attend a one-day workshop focused on prescribed fire. The morning will consist of classroom activities to become familiar with terminology, equipment, safety protocols, fire weather observations, fire behavior, prescribed fire planning, etc.The afternoon session will consist of a live fire experience with producers cycling through different fire line positions with a coach to gain experience with multiple prescribed fire operations. Producers will gain real life experience and skills in each position that will enable them to feel more confident in the application of prescribed fire. Experience will also help producers understand how and why fire may be implemented in their own operation.
